“Becoming a member of the American Society of Cinematographers, has been both a total joy and rebalancing of a life – along with getting married. When this show at the Leica Gallery Los Angeles was first discussed, I submitted my Leica 35mm film portfolios from India, Eastern Turkey, and eight years of repeat trips to Oaxaca, Mexico. I also included maybe a doz en digital Leica Monochrom frames for consideration, from a recent trip to a series of small islands of f the Western coast of Ireland. Leica Gallery Manager Paris Chong, saw them and said, “Hey, where’s that?”. I was assigned Ireland as my contribution to the show “Islands” and was initially a bit apprehensive about the task – for a street photographer used to the pace and variety of life’s activities in India and Mexico, I already knew that life on isolated Irish islands was not exactly cut from the same cloth. But every time you’re faced with a new challenge, the realities of new places and new people never fail to totally surprise, impress, and remind you why you love a life shared with others –
through a lens.” – David Darby
