Oh, to be a hopeless Sapphic. A term woven in culture through the lovergirl writing and longing of the ancient Greek poet Sappho. Its resurgence in our lexicon is a tribute to the people who celebrate desire, expression, and romance toward women of any orientation. To be Sapphic is to love as a lesbian, bisexual, or pansexual, including gender identities. This is the Sapphic Way.
For the last decade, I have documented the rise of the Sapphic community building across New York City’s nightlife through events like Futch, Misster Party, Lez Get Physical, and Chlomosexual. This is a series that showcases the performances, community outreach, and drama that make Sapphics dynamic. We make performances about ideologies that consider us sinful, we have the freedom to rave while pregnant, and let go of our inhibitions to the beat of a DJ. In a time when we are being told to hide, these photographs are proof that we long to express our truth, desire for each other, and to play. That is, the Sapphic Way.
