Sarah Lee is a London based photographer who came to the medium whilst studying literature at University College London in the late 1990s.
Since graduating she’s worked for numerous clients both commercial and editorial, including The Guardian, specializing in portraiture features and the Arts. Lee has been published by a number of other publications including TIME, Billboard, Rolling Stone, Intelligent Life and Vanity Fair.
During 2011 and 2012 she shot the portrait campaign for Coldplay’s MX album and tour and has just finished work on an extensive long-term documentary project, West of West, focusing on the end of Route 66, soon to be published by Unbound.
Lee’s photographs have been widely exhibited including at the National Portrait Gallery, London and she is currently working on a new series, Tender are the Night Hawks, focusing on night bus journeys across the city – a selection of which were recently exhibited at Leica’s Wetzlar headquarters.
An official BAFTA photographer since 2015, Lee’s commissions have allowed her extraordinary behind the scenes access to every facet of the Awards event. What interests her most are the intimate, semi-private moments and spaces during what is an incredibly formal and public international occasion. Whilst drawn to the glamour and echoes of “old Hollywood”, she has refined a sensibility and approach, which revels in the territory of the unguarded, playful and surreal.
Sarah Lee is an ambassador for Leica UK and a fellow of The British American Project.
