Chinese artist and fake-maker Liao Yibai (1971, China) is the creator of the Fake Leica series of model cameras; oversized stainless steel sculptures, glistening with mirror finishes and minutely perfect details. The one-off huge version weighs 350 kilograms (770 pounds) and displayed at our flagship store in Hollywood.
Growing up during the late 1970s in the military factory, Yibai recalls it was a dangerous place but it had its privileges. One of those was occasional access to a camera. The cameraman in the factory would use a fake Leica camera to record the factory missile tests, both the successes and failures. At times he was able to use the camera to take pictures. His father’s assistant once gave him a chance to hit the shutter button for a photo and from then on, he was very interested in cameras and taking pictures.
